What mental tools do people use to survive difficult situations?
Characters in The Book of Negroes use many tools to help them in difficult decisions. Aminata uses her intelligence as a tool to help her. She is able to look at the situations from different perspectives which allow her to see how a situation may affect not only her, but the others around her. Chekura uses his and others emotional feelings as a tool to help him. He takes into consideration how a decision may affect those important to him. He makes decisions that may be endangering to him so that he is able to make someone happy. Fanta combats situations very differently than the others. She uses her harsh reasoning’s. She does not waste time dwelling and acts very quickly. For example, when a fight was breaking out on the ship, she wasted no time to react. “Fanta brought out the knife from the medicines man’s room, placed a hand over the baby’s neck and jerked up his chin.” She didn’t think about the situation, she just reacted. ![]() Personally, I can relate to Aminata when making decisions. I like to look at different viewpoints and thinking of the pros and cons when in difficult situations. I remember that when I was deciding what high school to go to, I used these tools to help me.
